Gunma

Location:  Set in mountainous surroundings, Gunma is located in the Kanto region of Honshu Island, and is one of Japan's eight landlocked prefectures.

Look out for: Nearly 15% of Gunma is designated as natural parkland.  The famous Kusatsu Onsen baths are located here, both picturesque and relaxing. The Oze National Park, Tomioka Silk Mill, and Fukiware Falls (known as the 'Niagara of Japan') are all lovely spots to visit.

Food to try:  Gunma has three standout eats: okkirikomi (a simmered dish of thick wheat noodles, vegetables, with either miso and sweet mirin or soy sauce flavors), konnyaku (a firm semi-transluscent jelly made from the corm of the konnyaku potato), and yaki-manju (skewers of charcoal roasted sweet buns filled with bean paste).

Tips:  If you drive, watch out for the prefecture's eleven 'Melody Roads,'  where cut grooves in the roads' surfaces vibrate under your wheels and emit a song.
